Kids Bedrooms: Where the Wild Things Are

June 15, 2017

Imaginations have run wild in the world of children’s bedroom décor. From ornate ceilings to fantastical fixtures, the sky is the limit in the design world of tots. It’s “up, up, and away” in terms of decorated ceilings where eye-catching designs are found in the form of ceiling stripes, polka dots, and hombre hues. This design element breathes life into an often forgotten space. Fun and playful, ceiling stripes tie together the colors of a room. In the picture below, the pop of blue from the ceiling stripes is reflected in the blue hue of the industrial-style lockers, also a hot trend in home design. If all that dazzling design is too much, take a little rest and enjoy the tranquility of a thematic retreat like the camp-out room in our Aston model home. Kids can explore the great outdoors from the comfort of their bedrooms, roasting s’mores over the faux fire or napping in the treehouse loft. Bedrooms that include activities are a hot trend in the decorating world, with designers incorporating climbing walls, slides, secret forts, and petite performance stages into the design of kids’ bedrooms. For the more sophisticated child in your life, designers are fashioning bedrooms that can grow with the child. Take for example the swan themed room found in the Aston model. With its on-trend grey walls and turquoise accents, the swan room easily transitions from the playful little girl to the growing tween. Speaking of tweens, kids may want to express themselves by decorating their bedrooms, as they grow older. A fun way for them to enjoy some creative license is with their walls and fixtures. Take for example this funky ceiling fan, decorated with brightly colored stripes. Duct tape applied with intention can turn a standard fixture into a conversation piece. Another way to include kids is by inviting them to select an accent color for a wall in their room, or a decorative wallpaper to bring attention to a particular spot. Many designers have launched new lines of trendy wallpapers with hot designs that are much easier to install than your grandma’s wallpaper! Kids also love fun and playful seating. The home features a swing hung from the ceiling, an exciting feature for a young child decorating his or her bedroom. Other trendy seating options include fuzzy poufs, fun footstools, and geometric chairs. Note the seating in the Magic Treehouse inspired room that utilizes a low shelf with cubbies that pull double duty as a seating area. No matter how you decide to decorate your child’s room, don’t be afraid to take some design risks. Keep it playful, and let your child participate in the process. After all, it will be his or her retreat for years to come. Need inspiration? Visit one of Main Street’s many model homes, decorated with today’s hottest trends.
