Main Street Homes Helps Support ALS Research with Donation to Harper’s Hope

October 31, 2017

Main Street Homes, a leading homebuilder in Richmond, Virginia and proponent of ALS research gave back to the community with a donation of $82,000 to the Harper’s Hope Fund for ALS. On October 16, 2017, Main Street Homes held a Charity Golf Tournament at the Brandermill Country Club in support of ALS research and Bobby Quinn, a long-time friend, trade partner and Main Street homeowner, who was diagnosed with ALS this past year.

Over 150 golfers participated in the 11AM shotgun start, and enjoyed numerous contests, catering, and entertainment along the course! Throughout the day, over 24 silent auction items were bid on with proceeds benefitting the Harper’s Hope Fund. A celebratory dinner reception was held at the Brandermill Country Club where tournament winners were announced and a festive live auction was held. Bobby and Michele Quinn attended the golf tournament and awards dinner. Dr. Scott Vota, a Virginia Commonwealth University neurologist and Director of the Adult Neurology Residency Program, spoke at the awards dinner. What is ALS? Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, attacks the nerve cells known as neurons that reach from the brain down through the spinal cord and into the body to control voluntary muscles. About 35,000 Americans have ALS, and roughly 5,600 are diagnosed each year.

Gradually, their ability to control muscle activity is lost as motor neurons degenerate and die.

The VCU Department of Neurology is one of 44 multidisciplinary ALS clinics in the United States that have partnered with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. These clinics provide multidisciplinary treatment, and have been able to extend a patient’s life expectancy by 30 percent. At the same time, they provide valuable support for families and caregivers.

Today there is no treatment that can stop or reverse the damage caused by ALS. But there is hope. In 2014, Victor Harper and his family created the Harper’s Hope Fund to make a significant difference in ALS research and care.

Harper’s Hope for ALS Aims to:

  • Expand VCU’s multidisciplinary ALS clinic.
  • Create an assistance program to support patients and their families.
  • Establish a translational research program targeting ALS.
  • Create an education and outreach program.

It’s our desire that through this event we bring awareness to ALS and support Harper’s Hope, a local ALS charity, and show our care for Bobby and the many others in our community that are affected by this disease.
