November 4, 2022

At Main Street Homes, our exemplary reputation goes far beyond building remarkable homes in sought-after communities throughout RVA. Above all, we care about giving back, building value and raising awareness about important causes in the communities where we build—which is exactly where the idea of our Charity Golf Tournament stems from. Since 2017, Main Street Homes has raised over $430,000 for the Harper’s Hope Fund for ALS at VCU Health and Team Quinn for ALS through this annual event—and we couldn’t be more proud and honored to be a part of something so impactful. Continue reading to find out more about this year’s Charity Golf Tournament and what it means to Main Street Homes and the communities around us.

Supporting the cause

There are a number of great causes to support, both locally and nationwide, and Main Street Homes is proud to raise awareness for ALS again this year to honor our dear friend Bobby Quinn—a long-time trade partner with Griffith Heating & Cooling and a Main Street homeowner who was diagnosed with ALS in 2016. In 2021, we raised $90,000 toward the cause, and we are hoping to exceed that amount in 2022.

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It progresses to involve muscles that control vital functions such as speech, swallowing and breathing—and tragically, the majority of people with ALS end up going into respiratory failure, usually within 3 to 5 years from when the symptoms first appear. As an inexplicable disease, it’s hard to know what causes most cases of ALS—but scientists have been studying many factors that could be linked to a diagnosis, such as heredity or environmental exposures. According to the CDC, an estimated 31,000 people are living with ALS in the United States with about 5,000 new diagnoses each year. This disease affects so many people and their loved ones, and at Main Street Homes—nothing is more important to us than doing our part in any way possible.

Our charities

With the challenges, expenses and obstacles that ALS patients face daily and the uncertainties surrounding the disease, even the slightest donation can make a vast difference to work toward further research or help cover medical expenses—which is why we’re proud to donate to Team Quinn for ALS and Harper’s Hope Fund for ALS at VCU Health

Team Quinn for ALS is a non-profit started by Bobby & Michelle Quinn in July of 2019—created to serve Virginia ALS patients and their families by providing funds to help pay for out-of-pocket expenses related to their care and treatment of the disease. Their mission is spreading awareness of ALS and raising funds for patients battling the disease to help improve their everyday lives.

Harper’s Hope Fund for ALS at VCU Health was established in 2014 by Victor Harper and his family to make a significant difference in ALS research and care. The fund seeks to improve the clinical program at VCU, give patients ample resources, and educate the medical and general public about the disease while rigorously searching for a cure.

Our team at Main Street Homes couldn’t be more honored to raise awareness and funds for these two remarkable organizations that strive to help ALS patients and improve their everyday lives.

2022 golf tournament

To help raise as many funds as possible for these incredible charities, Main Street Homes hosted our annual golf tournament for the benefit of the cause. This year’s tournament took place on October 24th from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Brandermill Country Club in Midlothian, Virginia with an array of activities and events for participants and guests to enjoy.

From start to finish, the day was full of fun, joy and celebration to show our support for ALS patients and the wonderful charities that work tirelessly toward their missions—from the on-course food, games and fun to the celebratory happy hour with tournament highlights to wrap up the day. Although this year’s tournament has passed, we encourage everyone to continue to support both Harper’s Hope Fund and Team Quinn by donating to them directly.
