Our Top Fall Maintenance Tips for Your Home

raking leaves and checking the gutters on your home

October 20, 2022

Life can get busy, especially during the fall months when there is an endless amount of fun seasonal activities that we simply have to add to our calendars. While this exciting seasonal schedule can make you cringe when you hear your neighbor’s leaf blower, it’s important to take time to ensure that your home is ready for the upcoming winter. If you’ve just moved into your new construction Main Street Home, or if you’ve lived in yours for a few years now, it’s never a bad idea to think about taking preventative maintenance measures to ensure that your home is always ready for whatever the world throws its way.

Keep the cold air out

Before the temperatures drop significantly, it’s a great time to walk your home and ensure that there are no drafts, especially around your windows and doors. Adding some weather stripping or sealing exterior caulk to those areas will help ensure that the cold air stays where it belongs—outside of your home.

Look at your landscaping

Next up on the list is your yard and landscaping. The winter weather could bring major storms to the area, so it’s especially important to ensure that your trees are healthy. Call a professional to prune or remove anything that could cause further damage to your home.

While raking or blowing your leaves isn’t the most exciting weekend activity, keeping up with the work is a great way to ensure that your lawn will stay healthy when the spring weather makes its next appearance.

Inspect your gutters

It’s a great time to clean out your gutters of fallen leaves, acorns or branches. To keep from having any drainage problems, keep your gutters clear year-round.

Check your HVAC system

Before the weather gets too cold, you’ll want to take a look at your HVAC system and ensure that everything is in working condition. Similar to your roof, if you don’t necessarily know what to look for, it’s never a bad idea to call a professional to come take a look—but by giving the HVAC system a simple visual inspection, you can usually see if there are any physical signs of damage that need to be taken care of.

Replace all the batteries in the detectors

Finally, it’s typically suggested that you replace the batteries in your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors twice every year.
