Moving Made Easy: Tips for a Summer Relocation

New homebuyer checking her moving checklist before moving into her new home in the Central Virginia area.

July 23, 2025

Summer is one of the most popular times of year to move, and for good reason. School is out, the weather is more cooperative and there’s often more flexibility with work schedules. While these are all positives, it can come with its own set of challenges as well like heat, peak moving demand and the chaos that comes with some summer schedules. At Main Street Homes, we know how important a smooth transition can be when you’re moving into a brand-new home, and that’s why we’ve compiled our top tips to help make your summer move as stress-free as possible.

1. Plan (Way) Ahead

Since summer is the peak moving season, moving companies, truck rentals and even storage units book up quickly. The earlier you start planning, the better your chances of getting your preferred dates and services.

  • Book your moving company at least 6-8 weeks in advance.
  • Reserve storage units(if applicable) or moving trucks early if you plan on moving yourself.
  • Create a moving checklist with important deadlines.

Starting early also gives you time to notify schools, update your address and transfer utilities without any last-minute panic.

2. Beat the Heat

Moving in the summer heat can take a toll on both people and possessions, so make it a priority to protect your health, and your belongings, by planning around the hottest parts of the day.

  • Schedule your move for early morning or late afternoon.
  • Dress in light, breathable clothing and wear sunscreen
  • Keep bottled water and snacks on hand for you and anyone helping.
  • Avoid packing heat-sensitive items like candles, electronics or perishable food until the last moment.

Your moving day will be physically demanding, so pacing yourself and staying cool is key.

3. Declutter Before You Pack

One of the best ways to make your move easier is to simply have less stuff, and summer is a great time to declutter. Take a weekend to sort through your closets, kitchen, garage and storage spaces, and ask yourself:

  • Have I used this in the last year?
  • Does it still work or serve a purpose?
  • Will it fit or match in my new home?

Then, divide your items into four categories: keep, donate, sell and toss. Less to move means less to stress over.

4. Label Everything Like a Pro

There’s nothing worse than arriving in your new home, exhausted from moving and not knowing where your essentials are. Labeling boxes clearly can save you hours of digging later.

Use a consistent system:

  • Label by room and contents (Kitchen - Pots & Pans).
  • Use colored stickers or markers for each room.
  • Mark “Open First” on boxes with items like toiletries, paper towels, sheets and phone chargers.

Consider creating an inventory list if you’re using movers, so you can keep track of everything during transit.

5. Prep Your New Home Before Moving Day

If you’re able to access your new home a few days before you fully move, take advantage of that time to make moving in even easier. Here are a few pre-move tasks worth tackling:

  • Set up beds or assemble some furniture ahead of time.
  • Stock the bathrooms with toilet paper, soap and towels.
  • Install fans or window coverings to keep rooms cool.

Even small touches can go a long way in making your first night feel like home.

6. Take Time to Celebrate the New Chapter

It’s easy to get caught up in the logistics of moving and forget to enjoy the moment, but this is a big step. Take time to celebrate your accomplishment and welcome the new memories ahead.

  • Order takeout from a local restaurant in your new neighborhood.
  • Unpack a few special items that make the house feel like home.
  • Snap a family photo in front of your new front door.
